Resurrection on South Uist
In the cemetery at Hallam on South Uist the dead have names and, occasionally, portraits. Their stones face eastwards over the autumn bronze peatlands to the rising sun and the hope of future resurrection. Below the modern graveyard an ancient one amongst the hummocking Atlantic sand-dunes. Over three thousand years ago peat mummified ancestors were resurrected by the anonymous Bronze Age islanders.

Returning First World War servicemen were denied land promised to them.
The theme of this year’s @BookWeekScot is “rebels” On the peatlands returning First World War servicemen and their families were denied land promised to them. In a series of ‘land raids’ they secured the crofts promised to them, this memorial at Gress, Isle of Lewis celebrates their victory.
