“The Killing Times.” In the 17th century when many Presbyterian dissenters refused to accept the Crown’s interference in religious affairs their followers sought refuge in the moorlands. One such Covenanter was John Brown of Priesthill in Ayrshire who in 1685 was executed beside his peat stack by James Graham of Claverhouse for refusing to take an oath of allegiance to the King.
