At Drumochter Pass black grouse are practicing for the lek, bouncing their “truck, truck” calls off the close, steep hills. ‘Lek’ is the word used to describe the area, often on the flat moor, where rival blackcocks battle it out for the right to mate with the greyhens and has Old Norse origins meaning ‘play’. These game birds are unaware that others, with a different sense of play, are also readying themselves for the upcoming season.
