Hairst 3. The water pump is now silent. Its hose droops limply into the ditch that drained the water from the bog. The cropped wheat stubble is so dry the hare’s feet crackle as it lopes away.

Hairst 2. I followed the recommended soil composition in an 1826 book on draining and planting peat bogs when sowing my broad beans this year- glacial clay, peat, burnt peat ash, inert sand and gravel.
