“…And nought but peat reek i’ my head, How can I write what ye can read?”- Burns, ‘Epistle to Hugh Parker’
“…Wi’ a’ this care and a’ this grief,
And sma’, sma’ prospect of relief,
And nought but peat reek i’ my head,
How can I write what ye can read?
Tarbolton, twenty-fourth o’ June,
Ye’ll find me in a better tune;
But till we meet and weet our whistle,
Tak this excuse for nae epistle.”

homage to Robert Smithson’s ‘Spiral Mangrove Swamp’ 1971. Peat containing within itself ancient trees is formed on the half land/half water of Scottish moors from millennia of tiny decaying sphagnum mosses. In this work they replace Smithson’s water loving mangrove trees. It has the feel of a beaded necklace, an archaeological find dug out of the peat on display in a museum or the rings of a bronze age hill fort in the landscape.

Wee beasties swimming under the ice
The bog is so rich in life that even when the surface is frozen you can see wee beasties swimming under the ice…or could if I’d taken a better photo.
